Minority Report Frame Analysis

In the opening scenes before this picture, we see broken shots of a family who appears to be in trouble. We see snippets of blood, screaming and scissors which draws us to the conclusion of a family struggle and a possible murder. Along with this, the opening scenes are very dark and blurry so it appears that these events were happening in the past, and that we are witnessing a flashback.

In contrast to this, following the dark flashback is a bright, futuristic scene of Agatha. This drastic color change clearly shows that the time period switches from past to present. In addition, they used a transition going from an extreme close up of the eye in the previous scene, to zooming out of a new eye which was Agathas. This zoom in/zoom out effect used by the director shows that Agatha was the one witnessing the flashback.

We can also draw this conclusion based off of the camera angles in the scene above. This is filmed from a high angle shot, similar to a birds eye view. This puts our entire focus on Agatha since she is taking up most of the frame. Because of this, Agatha has a sense of importance about her in this scene since it is just her. Following this scene, she whispers the words “murder” and then proceeds to submerge herself in the water. This contributes to her important appearance in the scene because she is leaving us with new information which only she knew. To close off this introduction to the movie, the way she say’s “murder” and vanishes into the tub of water accurately concludes the eeriness, confusion and mystery we see throughout these opening scenes.
